Appointment Length and Frequency
Hemodialysis appointments typically last between three to four hours, depending on factors such as your medical condition and treatment plan. Most patients receive dialysis three times a week, with each session scheduled on alternate days to ensure adequate time for the body to recover between treatments.
Preparing for Your Appointment
Before your dialysis appointment, it’s essential to prepare accordingly. Be sure to bring any medications you are currently taking, as well as a list of allergies and medical conditions. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your arms or legs, depending on where your dialysis access site is located.
Arriving at the Dialysis Center
Upon arrival at the Rogosin Institute Dialysis Center at the Methodist Home, you will be greeted by our friendly and knowledgeable staff. They will assist you in getting settled and comfortable in one of our modern treatment chairs. Your assigned nurse or technician will review your medical history and treatment plan before starting the dialysis process.
During the Dialysis Treatment
During the dialysis treatment, you will be connected to the dialysis machine, which filters waste products and excess fluid from your blood before pumping the blood back into your body. The process involves inserting needles into your dialysis access site, typically located in your arm or leg. While the dialysis machine is running, you will be invited to relax, read, watch TV, or listen to music.
Monitoring and Support
Throughout your dialysis session, our staff will monitor your vital signs and adjust the machine settings as needed to ensure your safety and comfort. If you experience any discomfort or side effects during treatment, don’t hesitate to notify your nurse or technician immediately. We are here to provide support and address any concerns you may have.
After the Dialysis Treatment
Once the dialysis treatment is complete, the needles will be removed from your access site, and a bandage will be applied to prevent bleeding. You may feel a bit tired or lightheaded after treatment, so it is essential to take it easy and avoid strenuous activities for the rest of the day. Be sure to stay hydrated and follow any dietary recommendations provided by your healthcare team.
